Two female mixed martial artists are set to make history at the upcoming Rumble on the Rock MMA event.
Ioana Popescu is set to face a fighter named Celine, whose last name is not listed on the event’s social media page.
It’s beleived to be the first time two women will fight each other in an MMA or kickboxing event in the Cayman Islands.
Event organiser Flloyd Moxam says it’s a testiment to how far the sport has grown in the country.
“Last time I was on the show we talked about how much of an impact Ronda Rousey’s had on the sport,” Moxam said on the 27 episode of Let’s Talk Sports. “That ripple effect is felt all the way here. We have more women training not just to stay in shape but they want to compete. It’s just definitely a big, big boost for the sport.”
The event takes place 13 February at Lillies. The six-fight card includes:
Kial Whorms v. Anthony Fernandes
Ioana Popescu v. Celine
Logan Chinoy v. Israel Villanueva
TJ Hucker v. Bennard Ebanks
Aaron Powell v. Tim Coulson
Flloyd Moxam v. Jesse Livingston
