A year ago Tonie Chisholm was crowned Miss Cayman Islands 2015. She was the first young lady to take on the title and crown, after the pageant went on, an almost 4 year hiatus.
Miss Chisholm notes how quickly the year went by; “It doesn’t feel like it’s been a year, it feels like it’s been two weeks”, she says.
Her most recent venture as Miss Cayman Islands, was representing the country in the Miss Universe competition last month. The beauty queen says it’s hard to describe the experience, because it was so unique. While she felt the pressure, she says she enjoyed the experience of being on stage. This year’s pageant was marked by a blunder, when the host, Steve Harvey, mistakenly announced the wrong name for the winner. Miss Chisholm says it was an awkward situation, but in the end everything turned out right.
Her participation in Miss Universe wasn’t the only part of her journey as Miss Cayman Islands. Tonie also had the chance to participate in the Stingray Tourism Awards, support the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and take part in other community events. The most memorable for her was the CayFilm film festival. She says it gave her the opportunity to meet people in the industry she got to study.
When she looks back on her time as Miss Cayman Islands Miss Chisholm says “It’s been a year of growth, and taking myself out of my comfort zone.”
To the eight ladies vying for this year’s crown, she has one piece of advice, “Have fun.”
When she hands over her crown Tonie plans on pursuing opportunities within the film industry, with the possibility of going back to film school.
