Premier tells BBC why there’s no welfare state

Now to the television program that’s got many of you talking, and in some cases, spitting feathers.

Britain’s Trillion Pound Paradise aired on the BBC last week and has certainly caused a storm here.

In it Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin explained why Cayman doesn’t have a welfare state, in other words provide free housing and financial assistance to those less fortunate.

“Everything comes at a price,” said the Premier.

“If you want a welfare state you’re going to have to pay for it. The Cayman Islands government doesn’t have to impose such a huge tax burden because of all of these other services that are provided by charitable organisations.”
