Rare January hurricane poses no threat to Cayman

Is hurricane season coming early this year? Not necessarily, says the National Weather Service.

The first hurricane of 2016 has formed off of the West African coast and is tracking North.

Alex, as he’s known, is making history.

It’s the first time since back in 1938 that a hurricane has formed in the month of January, and the first hurricane to exist in January since 1955.

“This just highlights the unpredictability of weather, and not to alarm anybody, but you should always keep weather in mind and have some sort of a plan for any eventuality or disasters that may come,” said NWA Chief Meteorologist Kerry Powery

The category one storm poses no threat to Cayman, but is threatening the Azores, a set of small islands off of Portugal’s coast.
