Government said the time is right to move ahead to lengthen the runway at the Owen Roberts International Airport.
Deputy Premier and Tourism Minister Moses Kirkconnell said extending the runway to the west will allow for the possibility of new gateways to the island for visitors, like Seattle, Los Angeles, or Calgary, just to name a few.
He said the time to act is now. With several hotel projects in the works that will increase the island’s room stock significantly.
He says the airport business case calls it a trigger event.
“We see this trigger event happening before us, that we are going to start looking at how we lengthen the runway. The request for proposals will look at costing and engineering and how that will be done,” said Mr. Kirkconnell.
Mr. Kirkconnell said when more is known about how much the runway expansion will cost, then government can take a look at how to finance the project.
