Disgraced fraudster Canover Watson has been jailed for seven years.
On Friday (5 February) Justice Michael Mettyear sentenced the 45 year old Watson after Thursday’s convictions on charges related to fraud.
Mr. Watson showed no emotion as the justice told him: “As an accredited accountant you behaved shamelessly, falsifying presentations, emails, letters, contracts, references and signatures. You fooled a number of senior civil servants and possibly a minister. You tried to fool the jury. There, you failed.
“You were an inspiration to many young Caymanians. What on earth must they think now?”
A jury of six women and one man returned their guilty verdicts on conspiracy to defraud, conflict of interest, fraud on the government and breach of trust.
He was found not guilty on the count of transferring criminal property.
Judge Mettyear had special praise for the detectives from the anti-corruption commission who investigated the case.
