Combining high tech and public service careers

Young Caymanians can expect to hear more from the new director of the Department of Public Safety Communications about the different types of careers available in information technology fields.

Julian Lewis originally planned a police career in the RCIPS 15 years ago, but he later took a job in technical services. Now, back in a public safety role, he sees a variety of jobs that allow people to combine an interest in high tech with a desire to make a difference in their community.

Working at the emergency dispatch centre, for example, “is not just what the average person might think of as a call taker,” he said, “It’s a lot more. There is huge value to all of the computers we use, the software; there is a significant technical advance going on right now within the Comm Center.”
