Charity marathoner Derek Haines lends a hand in supporting the Special Needs Foundation (SNF). The runner and SNF team put together the 50/50 challenge. The premise was to get 50 runners to join Derek Haines in the Cayman Marathon, with the mission of raising $50,000.
Susie Bodden, the Executive Leader of SNF, says it was a great success. In the end 60 runners took part, and over $54,000 was raised for the foundation. The Foundation intends to use the funds for four programmes: Sports and leisure programme, respite care, family support group and its equestrienne programme. Mrs. Bodden says “we were so grateful to have Derek run for us.”
For Mr. Haines, he says he feels lucky he can still run and use it as a means to support local charities.
The SNF will continue to use the 50/50 challenge to raise funds, and are reaching out to other sports associations that would like to come on board in the fundraising efforts.
Mr. Haines says that for 2016 he is working to raise $1 million for the Have a Heart charity.
