The inaugural Poinciana festival put a spotlight on arts, music, and film from the creative minds living in Cayman. The three day festival began with a street fair, featuring local musicians and artisans. The following day the public was able to screen films from Cayman and the region. The festival wrapped up with an awards ceremony. The festival directors say it meet their expectations. “It was organic and very much at the roots level, which is what we want” says Badir Awe. Mr. Awe, and festival co-creator Will Doran say what brought them most joy was to see the artists being recognised and acknowledged for their work.
Mr. Awe and Mr. Doran plan to make the festival annual. It’s their hope that Poinciana, and other arts festival, makes Cayman a cultural destination. “We want to see people coming to Cayman for the art” says Mr. Doran.
The next project for the duo is continuing efforts for the Cayman Music Collective. Through this venture, there will be two performance a week, every week, which will showcase local musicians.
