Tigres win; Galaxy, Santos draw in CONCACAF Champions League playoffs

Tigres UANL came away with a victory while the LA Galaxy and Santos Lugana drew Wednesday (24 February) in CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals matchups.

Tigres’ Jose Rivas scored the winner in the 67th minute in that match, poking in a goal after a free kick was headed into the box. His teammate Jurgen Damm added an insurance goal in the 86th as the Tigres beat Real Salt Lake, 2-0.

In the day’s other game, the Galaxy and Santos Laguna drew 0-0.

Perhaps the best scoring opportunity came in the first minute when the Galaxy sent in a corner that was headed in for what looked like a sure score before it was saved at point-blank range.

“I think we’re still trying to find 100-percent fitness,” said former Liverpool star Steven Gerrard, who now plays with the Galaxy. “It was a difficult match against a good time. We’re happy with the zero goals conceded and we expect a tough match next week. But I think it’s still a 50-50 game, so we keep fighting.”

CONCACAF playoff matches resume next week.
