Youth footballers set to roll the dice in Las Vegas

Two Cayman Islands teams are set to kick off this month at the Mayor’s Cup International Showcase, in Las Vegas. That includes — for the first time — a girls team.

An under-16 boys team and an under-17 girls team plan to take off later this month.

This marks the fourth time that Cayman will send a boys team to the tournament. Their division includes teams from the US, Argentina, Canada, Mexico and Germany.

“Our players and coaches are looking forward to returning to Las Vegas for the fourth time. The experiences the boys have encountered during the previous three trips have been invaluable in their development as players on and off the field,” team coordinator Neil Murray said in a statement.

Organisers say the idea is to help expose Cayman’s youth players to international scouts.

Currently playing overseas for Cayman are Sebastian Martinez and Kray Foster at Swindon Town FC’s Youth Academy, Leighton Thomas at Yeoville Town FC’s Youth Academy and Ryan Jackson, Cameron Gray and Nathan Borde at the FAB Academy.
