This weekend swimmers will be heading into the open ocean for a relay. The event is hosted by the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA). Teams of four will participate in loop course starting and ending at Governor’s Beach. Young swimmers will take part in a 4 x 400m relay and older swimmers will swim in the 4x600m relay. There are categories for 12 and under, 13 and over, and corporate.
The race serves as a fundraiser to send swimmers to CARIFTA later this month. An elite team of twenty-two athletes have qualified to participate in the competition in Grenada. Ella Plunkett is one of those twenty-two swimmers heading off to the competition. When asked how she feels about the competition she says “I think I’m ready, I’m excited.”
The Massive Open Water Relay takes place Saturday (12 March). Special Olympic athletes will be participating in the race. T-shirts and a swag bag will be provided to the fist 150 swimmers registered. There will be awards for the top three teams in each categories. The race will be followed by a barbecue.
