March is Honouring Women’s Month, which highlights the value and importance of women in society. It is also an opportunity to put a spotlight on areas where women’s rights can be improved. Miriam Foster and Charmaine Miller of the Family Resource centre says this a chance for parents to focus on gender equality with their children.
Gender equality is the idea that while men and women are different, they are of equal value. Mrs. Foster says anything that lets children know they have worth is a powerful lesson. Mrs. Miller says it’s never to early to talk about gender equality. Children as young as two begin to see differences between sexes.
The ladies say it’s important for parents to put a focus on gender equality because not every child fits into gender norms. A child can feel isolated when they think they don’t fit in, which limits their potential and sense of worth. They also reminder parents to be aware of the message they are modeling to their children.
