Van driver jailed for 10 months

The driver of a van who caused the death of a woman more than three years ago was jailed for ten months on Tuesday (15 March).

Fitzroy Roach had pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving following the accident on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway in October 2012.

Delivering his sentence, Justice Alistair Malcolm said Mr. Roach had not been drinking, was not speeding and had not been using his cell phone at the time of the accident.

But he did point out he had had been working until 1.30 a.m. that morning, had slept in his van before setting off again at 5.30 a. m. just before the accident when he veered into the opposite lane and hit Mrs. Ramsey’s taxi.
