While one man’s trash may be another man’s treasure, a man who owns a recycling business says there’s plenty of treasure to mine…on Mount Trashmore.
Rolston Anglin from “Junk Cayman” says the George Town landfill could someday be reduced by excavating the site for materials that can be recycled. He predicts it could be a sizeable amount.
“If you are going to deal with MT. Trashmore, it would be a huge excavation project where you would excavate what’s there. If the soil isn’t contaminated, re-use it, and if they are salvageable recyclables, you do that. And the rest of it quite frankly, you more than likely will just have to bale it, line it properly, and probably put it back in there, but lined properly.” said Rolston Anglin from Junk Cayman.
Last year’s new national solid waste management strategy includes a section on possible landfill mining, and recommends a feasibility study to see if the benefits offset risks such as a release of gases and a potential low volume of useable material.
