After a peaceful election day, the Philippines has a new president. A man known for cleaning up one of the most dangerous cities in the country, Davao. During his time as Mayor of Davao, Rodrigo Duterte has made his region the fourth safest city in the world. Here in Cayman, we took to the streets to see what our local Filipino community has to say.

I voted for another candidate, I did not vote for him but in the back of my mind I knew that he was going to win the election, so it’s all prayers and crossed fingers that he would do a great job being the President of the Philippines,” said Art Ursau, the Philippines consulate of the Cayman Islands.

“I’m just excited to see the changes coming, I hope he can impose the whole Philippines, just like how he impose Davao,” said Hermalie Aleria, resident of the Cayman Islands.

“President Duterte is the new president of the Philippines because he is a good leader and change my country and no corruption and no drugs,” said Cesair Coloma, Chef of a local Filipino restaurant.

“To stop drugs, that’s what we really need in the Philippines, because right now, especially like Luzon and Visayas, the drugs there are rampant,” said local resident, Lilio Aleria.

“I think he’s very firm on his resolutions, I think that is one thing that is lacking in the previous administration, they have to be very firm on your decision,” said George Town resident, Rafael Fercol

“I will am putting my faith in him, I will try and be supportive in any way I could as an overseas citizen,” said resident Julieus Aurelio.

Rodrigo Duterte will begin his first day in office tomorrow, for the next six years he will make the country a safer place, according to his political mandate.
