Cayman increased its imports in 2015, but global oil prices fell so much last year that all those extra imports actually cost less.
In 2014, Cayman imported goods worth CI$ 814 million. Last year, Cayman imports cost only $763 million despite a two-percent increase in non-petroleum imports and a seven-percent increase in petroleum imports. Fuel prices were 39 percent lower in 2015 compared to the year before.
In other business notes, SteppingStones has hired Caymanian Britani Gendron as its new Staffing Coordinator. The staffing firm says Ms. Gendron spent five years in Canada gaining experience in the field of human resources before returning to further her career.
And Harneys has brought on an attorney who previously worked for Walkers, but her new post will be in Hong Kong. Joanne Verbiesen came to Cayman from New Zealand. She appeared frequently in Grand Court, including representing the Governor. In her new role, Ms. Verbiesen will be a litigation partner in Hong Kong as part of Harneys’ worldwide Cayman practice. Harneys added seven lawyers at its Cayman office last year.
