The Cayman Islands Football Association says its awaiting officials’ reports after a fight broke out during a match between Sunset and North Side Sunday (5 June).
Sunset won the CPL/FFD playoff with North Side, 3-0. The match pits the seventh-place Premier League team against the second place Foster’s First Division team with the winner earning the right to play in the CIFA Premier League next season.
Sunset led late in the game when a trio of players — Sunset’s Mark Keys and North Side’s Guiton King and Dwayne Wilson — were issued red cards. Moments later, a fight erupted in the area between the field and the dressing rooms, with players from both benches pouring in and joining the fracas.
In all, eight players were sent off in the match.
A CIFA spokesperson issued the following statement:
“We are awaiting the relevant reports from the officials, etc. and will submit the same to the Disciplinary Committee for consideration.”
Gavin Reynolds and Tom Chipchase scored for Sunset while the club also benefited from an own goal by Horrace Howell.
The fight marks the latest in a season marred by violent and threatening behaviour on the pitch.
In the addition to several fights on the field, CIFA also issued a statement earlier this year about players, coaches and fans assaulting referees.
One incident in April resulted in a referee being taken to the hospital after he was assaulted on the pitch by a pair of Bodden Town players who had been sent off earlier in the match.
