Gov’t pays nearly $212K for student-athletes to play

Government spent $211,661 during the 2016/17 academic year for nine student-athletes to attend school overseas on sports-related scholarships.

The information was received by the National Workforce Development Agency — tasked with administering the scholarships — through a Freedom of Information request.

Seven of the recipients attend college in the United States while two others are for athletes pursuing football in the UK.
