Academy forward Jahmai Griffiths scored twice to lead his club to a 4-1 win over IFFDC 20 June in its opening match of the Cayman Airways Under-14 Invitational Youth Cup.
Griffiths put his team on the board with a seventh-minute strike.
Dallas-based IFFDC nearly equalised later in the half when Academy keeper Maxwell Twight was caught out of position, but left back Matthew Haynes was there to head away the shot before it crossed the line.
Play was halted for several minutes near the 30th minute when Griffiths collided with IFFDC keeper Connor Bryant as both chased down a loose ball just outside the six-yard box. Bryant was taken to the hospital with a broken bone in his leg. Griffiths was issued a yellow card on the play.
Harrison Hew put Academy up 2-0 just before the half when he sent in a prayer from nearly 35 yards out that the substitute IFFDC keeper mishandled. Referees deliberated momentarily whether the ball crossed the goal line before awarding the score.
Griffiths then added his second score after the half before Corey Smith added a bit of insurance for Academy.
In the day’s other matches, Sunset and REV Soccer Club — from Minnesota — played to a 0-0 draw while Jamaica’s Cavalier Soccer Club shutout England’s Gillingham FC 2-0 in the finale.
