France opened its 2016 European Championships tournament with a 2-1 win against Romania after a stunning late goal by Dimitri Payet avoided a disappointing start for the home nation.
France took a 1-0 lead in the 58th when Olivier Giroud headed in a cross from Payet but that lead only lasted seven minutes. That’s when Romania forward Bogdan Stancu slotted in from the penalty spot.
Payet, however, curled in a shot off his left foot in the 89th for the game winner.
The opening day was marred by riots in Marseille, where fans clashed with police.
