Police: zero tolerance towards illegal weapons

Police have promised zero tolerance for those who take weapons while on a night out. Officers say if a person is caught carrying knives or anything offensive, they will be will be punished in accordance with the law.

The warning comes after a number of incidents in which police have been called out to bars and night clubs in the early morning hours, most times just before closing time to deal with complaints of weapons. One such notable and recent case was this weekend, when a man was tazed after he brandished a flare gun.

A spokes person for the RCIPS says security officers at these establishments must avail themselves of the law and notify police any time a weapon is found.

In a press release the RCIPS said, “We learned of a bar at which security personnel removed ten knives from patrons who entered the establishment, and then returned these knives to patrons when they left.”

Police added, while it not chastising private security personnel, it is their duty to notify the police anytime a weapon is recovered.
