A former Romanian politician who’s been held in Cayman since late last year, will be sent back to Eastern Europe.
Mihai Tanjala has been on the run since 2011, after fleeing his homeland following his conviction for corruption.
He has been held by the authorities in Cayman since December, and has fought extradition to Romania, claiming his life was at risk if he returned home.
In court Friday (3 June), Tanjala argued his innocence, saying his prosecution in Romania was politically motivated.
But judge Mr. Justice Malcolm Swift dismissed those claims, and upheld an earlier decision to have him sent back to Romania to serve his original prison sentence.
