It took extra time and a penalty shootout but Sunset FC was able to defend its FA Cup title Sunday (29 May) with a 2-2 (3-2) win over Elite.
“We’ve played as a unit the entire season, losing one game since the start of the season,” Sunset centre back Sophia Dilbert said. “So we had faith in each other. Our coach had faith in us and he just said, ‘listen, let’s do this. Let’s do what we do best — resilience — and pull out a win.'”
CIFA has not released the official results nor scorers in the game but this much we do know — the teams were knotted at 1-1 after regulation and Elite’s Shanelle Frederick put her club ahead in extra time when she flew past her mark and sent a left-footed strike past Sunset keeper Jovani Hessing.
With time in the extra session winding down, however, a defensive miscommunication let Sunset’s Brittany Ebanks take control of the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and tap the equaliser in as the keeper had come out to try and control the ball.
Both teams converted two of their first four penalties.
In the fifth round, Dilbert converted but Frederick was unable to do the same. Hessing made a save on the rocket off Frederick’s foot, but a shot that was sent right at the keeper.
Sunset also won the Women’s League regular-season title.
