We’ve asked this question in regards to a new government proposal on allowing cannabis oil: If a patient is prescribed cannabis oil by a doctor, will his or her insurance company cover it?
Dr. Dirk Belfonte saidin the past, insurance companies have been hesitant to cover certain new medications.
Government has signaled it is ready to allow doctors to prescribe cannabis oil, derived from the marijuana plant.
Dr. Belfonte told Cayman 27 insurance companies would likely need to be convinced cannabis oil was the best course of treatment for a patient.
“We always have a fight with insurance companies when a new drug or new treatment comes out, and over time, we find that they do relax a little bit and they do realize that, look, this is important, so we are going to treat,” said Dr. Belfonte.
Dr. Belfonte told Cayman 27 cannabis oil could be beneficial to patients, but he believes strict guidelines are appropriate.
