Some of Cayman’s best youth footballers returned home Sunday (24 July) to a hero’s welcome.

Members of Academy Sports Club came home from Minnesota, where they played in the Schwan’s USA Cup, one of the largest football tournaments in the US.

Academy’s Under-10 team won the seven-on-seven division, becoming the second Academy SC team in as many years to win a championship at the competition

“It felt good,” said Academy player Jahmar Campbell, one of the U-10 team’s standouts. “But celebrating, there was always a little because you didn’t want to disrespect the other team. But it was overall very good and very exciting and it was a good experience.”

Academy sent four teams to participate, three of which advanced to the semifinals stage of the tournament.

“It was very good,” Academy SC coach Paul Byles said. “I feel very good. They had a lot of fun, that’s the most important part, and especially for the younger age group, like these guys, like Jahmar. They just played very well.”
