Shakur Welcome’s penalty staked Cayman to a three-point second half lead but Mexico scored 19-unanswered points to deal Cayman a 26-10 loss in their Rugby Americas North Under-19 Championship group finale.

A win would’ve propelled the local squad into the tournament finals, but instead it’s Mexico that will face USA South for the title.

Cayman now will play Trinidad and Tobago 16 July in the third-place match.

Mexico got on the board first when it stole a Cayman Islands line out and quickly worked it to Captain Franco Guerrero, who broke through the line and sprinted the length of the field for the try.

Trailing 7-0, Cayman’s Alex Robertson evened the match a few minutes later. Cayman was awarded a penalty and Robertson’s quick-tap caught the Mexicans by surprise as he barreled in for his fifth try and two tournament games.

Welcome’s penalty then gave Cayman the lead after the break before Guerrero scored his second try of the game and Mexico added two more.
