Several Caribbean athletes took off in the Rio 2016 400-metre finals over the weekend but it was an athlete from South Africa that stole the spotlight.

Wayde van Niekerk won gold in the event by running a world record time of 43.03 seconds.

James — the defending Olympic champion — took silver with a time of 43.76 seconds while American LaShawn Merritt won bronze in 43.85 seconds.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Machel Cedenio took fourth in 44.01 seconds while Grenada’s other runner — this marks the first time Grenada had two athletes in an Olympic final — took seventh in a time of 44.45 seconds.
