Eight-year-old Jake Fagan decided to celebrate his birthday by giving back and was quite happy there were no presents to open for his birthday party.
“I just wanted to donate the money to someone so I chose the Special Olympics.”
For his 8th birthday, Jake told his mom, Leigh Fagan that he didn’t want presents, he wanted to have a party in honor of the Olympics and ask his 12 friends to donate to the cause.
“I asked my friends to, instead of give me birthday presents I want to ask for money because lots of other children needed the money more than I did.”
The Cayman Islands Special Olympics was his choice and today (Tuesday 27 September) he handed over CI$200 to SOCI. Jake got the idea of giving instead of getting from his birthday last year when he went to South Africa with his parents.
“We watched a video of the Rhino poaching happening in South Africa and Jake said he wanted to try and help so I said well its your birthday coming up and instead of asking for presences perhaps you can ask for money instead and you could donate it to save the Rhinos.”
Jake then did it again this year, raising funds to help SOCI athletes and he already has plans for his 9th birthday next year.
“I’m going to do the same next year and I’m going to put it to the Blue Iguana Foundation.”
