Activist group Colours Cayman is petitioning the UK government to protect Cayman’s LGBT community from discrimination.
The petition requests the Queen-in-council to extend the Equal Marriage Act of 2013 to the Cayman Islands. Petitioners say that action would not conflict with Cayman’s existing laws, as same-sex marriage is not prohibited under the constitution.
In the petition, Colours Cayman said the country’s LGBT community will continue to face discrimination unless the UK steps in.
Governor Helen Kilpatrick responded to the petition with a short note.
“The UK expects the Cayman Islands government to adhere to its international human rights obligations, and to pursue policies and enact legislation guaranteeing LGBT equality,” said the Governor’s response.
Independent MLAs, led by Anthony Eden plan to bring a motion in the next session that calls for a referendum on the same-sex marriage issue, which Mr. Eden told Cayman 27 the overwhelming majority of Caymanians don’t support.
