Invest 97L has strengthened as it enters the Caribbean and has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Matthew.
As 10 a.m. Wednesday (28 September), TS Matthew was located about 35 miles southeast of St. Lucia. It has maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center, and is moving west at 21 miles per hour.
A Tropical Storm warning has been issued for Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Lucia, Dominica, Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The NHC is advising those in Bonaire, Curacao, Aruba and other locations in the Lesser Antilles to closely monitor the storm.
Reports from the Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft anticipate the storm will strengthen over the next few days, according to the NHC. Tropical Storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles primarily to the northeast of the storm’s centre.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s five-day forecast cone predicts the storm will turn north over the weekend and head toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
