MLAs drilled down on Caymanian unemployment in a marathon session in the LA which ended around 11.40 Thursday (20 October).
Legislators battled over issues ranging from Government’s plans protecting Caymanian jobs in the event of redundancies to having all jobs registered on the National Workforce Development Agency as highlighted in Bodden Town MLA Alva Suckoo’s private motion. But it was Employment Minister Hon. Tara Rivers, in the firing line, as Independent MLAs questioned her ministry’s efforts on ensuring work permit holders were not given an advantage over jobless Caymanians.
But she says the Immigration Law in place to deal with those concerns.
Debate on Mr Suckoo’s motion went on well into the evening legislators also debated a motion from George Town MLA Winston Connolly calling for Government to implement an economic development and investment plan something Premier Hon. Alden McLaughlin says is already in place.
