A group of citizens who led the charge to save Smith Barcadere wants the community to join in the celebration.

The group Save the Cove is hosting a weekend full of events at the cherished public beach geared at the entire family.

Earlier this month, the group formed to oppose a developer’s plans to build a condo complex on private land next to Smith Barcadere. In just a few days, the group’s petition to stop the development had reached more than 3,000 signatures. By the end of the week, Government announced a deal in principle to purchase the land from developers.

Those behind the push to protect Smith Cove for all to enjoy say it’s something worth celebrating.

“The people are the winners, they are the beneficiaries of this decision to purchase the land next to Smith Cove, and the reason why it’s so important to come out and celebrate is, very infrequently we feel like our voices are heard, so when they are heard we need to celebrate and enjoy those success moments,” said Save the Cove’s Taura Ebanks.

The fun officially starts Saturday at 3:30 with a relaxing afternoon at the beach.

Sunday morning, volunteers will show some TLC to the propery, cleaning up any litter around the grounds.. That starts bright and early at 6AM.
