Year seven students at St. Ignatius school got a lesson in coral reef science from a renowned geologist.

Dr. Brian Jones explored the anatomy and habits of reef building corals we see around our islands, and discussed the threats delicate reef systems face, like coral bleaching.

Students told Cayman 27 they find learning about the underwater world relevant, as Cayman depends a lot on its environment.

“We live in an environment where reefs do grow, and it’s a part of our economy, and it’s a very big tourist site, so it’s important to learn about it so we don’t damage it in any way,” said Leila Sulliman-Maw, a year 7 student.

Water Authority Cayman has been presenting geology week in Cayman schools for four years now.
