Jamaica’s Olympic sprint double champions Usain Bolt and Elaine Thompson are among the three finalists for the IAAF male and female athlete of the year award.
Bolt is joined by Great Britain’s double gold medalist Mo Farah and South Africa’s 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk. Bolt is a six time winner of the award but it will be the first nomination for Thompsonm who equaled Jamaica’s national record of 10.70 in the 100 meter.
She will go up against Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana and Poland’s hammer thrower Anita Wlodarczy.
The finalists were determined by a three-way voting process. The IAAF council’s vote counted for 50 per cent of the result, the IAAF family’s vote counted for 25 per cent and a public vote, conducted via social media counted for 25 per cent of the final result.
The world athletes of the year will be announced live on stage at the IAAF Athletics Awards on December 2nd.
