Cayman may soon have some resolution to its internet and telecommunication challenges…

The information and communications technology authority says it’s in talks with local telecommunications providers to establish a local internet exchange point.
This would circumvent our reliance on undersea cables for services…

The announcement comes on the heels of Monday’s island-wide outage of internet service by one service provider – C3.

According to the ICTA on Monday around 5 am internet service was disrupted.
The cause equipment failure in Boca Raton, Florida resulting in the unavailability of communication between third parties and local operators.

Local providers such as C3, Digicel, Logic, Flow rely on wholesale internet service providers for connectivity.
ICTA acting Deputy Director of Industry Affairs Sonji Myles says meetings with the providers have been very productive and he looks forward to establishing local internet exchange infrastructure.
