Caymanian businessman Bryce Merren should have to continue serving his nine-year sentence in an american jail, according to US prosecutors.
Court documents show Mr. Merren is appealing to have his sentence reduced or vacated as his attorney had not visited him after his sentencing. As a result, he says he was not advised on how or when to appeal.
However, prosecutors have written the judge saying these grounds should not stand for several reasons, including that the businessman had waived his right to appeal when he pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute cocaine in an operation set up in Puerto Rico.
Mr. Merren is currently detained in a facility in the state of Georgia.
