Cattle imports help ensure holiday beef supply

There should be no problem finding local beef for holiday dinners this year after government facilitated the first mass import of beef steers in several years.

The 60 steers were purchased by 37 local ranchers for $1,200 per head. Government says it provided a grant of $112,000 to the Cayman Islands Agricultural Society to import three breeds of cattle from a farm in South Florida. The Society will use the money from the sale to buy breeding stock that will be used to help grow the local herds.
