Lobster season opens, grouper season closes

Great news for lobster lovers: the delicious decapod is back in season, and some have already bagged their daily limit.

By 8 AM this morning, successful lobster hunters had already posted pics of their bounty on social media. However, the DOE reminds the public that lobster season is not a free-for-all.

Only spiny lobster may be taken, with tails at least 6 inches in size. The catch limit is three per person or six per boat, whichever is less, with restrictions on the possession, sale, purchase, exchange, or donation of more than three lobster from Cayman waters.

Today also marks the beginning of closed season for the Nassau grouper. No one may take, purchase, or posses grouper from Cayman waters through May 1st.

To report poaching, or to report a restaurant you suspect may be serving grouper or other marine life out of season, call DOE enforcement officers at 916-4271 on Grand Cayman, 926-0136 on Cayman Brac, and 916-7021 on Little Cayman, or dial 911.
