The deadline to register to vote in the 2017 elections is just weeks away, and Opposition Leader McKeeva Bush is pushing for an extension.
He told Cayman 27 changes brought about by the new single member constituencies system have created confusion among the voting public. He said potential voters need more time to sign up, especially as these weeks leading up to the December 31st deadline can be quite hectic.
Because people are very busy, so I would hope that they would extend it to January, at least until the end of January, and when we get a chance, we change it so that we can have registration process.
Elections Supervisor Wesley Howell confirmed that his office is considering extending the date.
He said a decision is likely to be made this week. The deadline has been extended in the past, most recently in 2013.
