Three-time Olympian Ronald Forbes added a special touch to the 2017 John Gray High School’s ‘Physical Education’ Award winner at yesterday evening’s convocation.
Rashawn Powery, a graduating athlete with an interest in boxing, was the recipient of not only a trophy but a pair of signed boxing gloves from undefeated WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay ‘The Bronze Bomber’ Wilder.
“I think it was fitting, with him being an avid boxer coming up, it should give him a sense of encouragement, and will also give him something to physically look at to say ‘this is where I’ll be one of these days. He seemed very, very excited” Forbes said.
This was the second year in a row Forbes has given out the Physical Education Award at JGHS’s convocation. The Caymanian hurdler is a graduate of John Gray High School’s class of 2002, and says not winning the award in his graduating year motivated him to come back a second time.
“When I graduated in 2002, I had been on several track and field teams, but this is the one award I didn’t have. To be invited back is very special, I would never want a kid who works hard in his academics, and also in the athletic realm, to have an empty feeling.” Forbes said.
