Familiar faces sail to victory at 2018 Spring Regatta

No amount of amount of rain would keep youth sailors off the waters for this years Spring Regatta. Local sailors were joined by competitors who traveled from five countries for seven races over two days in three classes. In the Laser Fleet is was a Cayman sweep with Jesse Jackson taking first followed by Will Jackson and Ava Hider rounding out the top three.

“Overall this weekend was really good, competition was pretty stiff, it was nice weather, first day we had some light winds which are kind of challenging and today we had some bigger breeze” said Jackson

The Optimist Championship Fleet saw Matheo Capasso come out on top. Even Cayman’s top amateur sailor couldn’t ignore the howling winds of Caribbean sea.

“The competition was hard especially today because it was super windy and so it was straining on the muscles and stuff and it felt really good to win” said Capasso.

Over in the Opti Green Fleet, Finn Richards rose to the top of the group.Visiting Irish Sailor Sienna Wright surged second overall after two 1st place finishes on the final day.

“The competition was good, a lot the scores were very close together, and I’m really happy with my result because I was sure I was going to come third but I didn’t.”

In all 25 athletes were in competition, a strong turnout as Cayman’s sailors prepare for a busy summer season.
