Cayman’s first Fire Chief Kirkland Nixon got a hero’s send-off Sunday (13 May) as friends, family and well-wishers said their final goodbyes to him at the Lion’s Centre in George Town.
Mr. Nixon was described as a man for all seasons, an exemplary civil servant and a true Caymanian who did his best to help others.
Acting Fire Station Officer Ricardo Charlton said Mr. Nixon was a mentor to many.
“It’s one of those things that he’s helped so much people in society. I do not know if we will ever find anybody who can walk in his shoes after this, to do the same good that he has done for the Cayman Islands,” Mr. Charlton said.
After the service Mr. Nixon’s body was escorted by fire engines to his final resting place at the Tall Tree Cemetery, Pedro St. James.
