No free World Cup games: Merren says regulator should act

C3 and Hurley’s Media Managing Director Randy Merren says OfReg should step in to help get local providers broadcast rights for the 2018 World Cup games.
At it stands all games, even the free ones, will have to be blocked on Cayman’s local tv station.
The issue was raised when Mr. Merren appeared before the Public Accounts Committee Thursday afternoon (10 May.)
He explained Logic acquired free to air rights for the world’s largest football tournament even though it is not licensed for free to air. This means the games cannot be broadcast on local tv.
“Unless we can get some rights from Logic to broadcast those, C3 won’t have those games, Cayman 27. There is a simple way to solve this thing. The regulator should say if you do not have a free to air license you should not purchase the rights to the World Cup, to anything, you shouldn’t purchase those rights,” said Mr. Merren.
Mr. Merren stressed the need for action to be taken by the local regulator in this matter. We should state Hurley’s Media is Cayman 27’s parent company.
