A recommendation to ask Government to encourage OfReg to make Cayman 27 a must carry local station on cable TV is now before the Public Accounts Committee.
This issue was raised when Hurley’s Media Managing Director Randy Merren appeared before the committee last Thursday (10 May.)
He said Cayman 27, the only free to air station, comes at a significant cost especially producing local news , a product that may go away at some point.
He said as a Caymanian businessman he needs support to keep that product alive.
PAC Chairman Ezzard Miller asked, “Do you think it would outside of the industry norms if we made a recommendation to Government to encourage the regulator to tell all of the cable providers that they have to carry Cayman 27 and subscribe for it?”
Mr. Merren replied, “That would be the norm, it is done all over the place. It should be.”
Mr. Merren added the regulator can set the subscription fee, all they have to do is make it happen.
This issue has been a longstanding one with the former regulator ICTA which has now been amalgamated into OfReg.
