The non-profit One Dog at a Time animal rescue is appealing to the public for help with veterinary bills after a horrendously neglected/abused dog is surrendered to its care by a third party.
“This is the worst one we’ve ever seen. It’s by far the worst,” said ODAAT’s Paula Blane.
Ms. Blane told Cayman 27 the small breed animal, possibly a Yorkshire terrier, came to ODAAT Monday night with matted fur and multiple infected puncture wounds. They are calling the injured pooch ‘Virtue.’
She said the animal is very underweight with almost zero muscle mass. In addition, she said the dog’s teeth are completely rotted out and will need to be removed.
Ms. Blane told Cayman 27 she can’t comprehend how somebody could let their pet get to this state.
“If you can’t take care of it, just pick up the phone. There are so many groups out there, so many organisations that can help. They could’ve taken them to the Humane [Society] and got help,” said Ms. Blane. “Surrender the dog, don’t let it get in that state, in pain, in agony, unable to stand up, starving. There’s just no need. This hasn’t happened over the last week, these mats are probably years old.”
As it was surrendered by a third party, Ms. Blane said she doesn’t know who its owner is. She said the Department of Agriculture has been notified about the animal’s condition.
She said the vet bill is likely to be ‘atrocious’ and the group is accepting donations to One Dog at a Time’s account at Island Vets.
