$500k transfer to PWD: Winspear says no audit needed

Auditor General Sue Winspear says there’s no need to investigate the transfer of $500, ooo from the Ombudsman’s Office to Public Works Department in 2016, because it never happened.
Speaking during Thursday’s (25 October) Public Accounts Committee meeting Ms. Winspear clarified that as the Ombudsman’s external auditor she did not find any funding discrepancy in the Ombudsman’s 2016/2017 budget.
“There was no $500, 000 transferred to Public Works in 2016/2017. It was in 2018 when the work was undertaken. So I do not know why there was the confusion with witness testimony given to the House,” Ms. Winspear said.
It was during the last Finance Committee meeting that the transfer of funds was flagged by MLAs after they were told the money was paid to Public Works before refurbishment of the Ombudsman’s Office had commenced.

Finance Minister Hon. Roy McTaggart pledged to investigate the matter.

Thursday Financial Secretary Kenneth Jefferson said the internal audit into the transaction is still ongoing.
