Basketball: Blazers, Courage net Week One U19 wins

Tazmar Dawkins led the way with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals, 3 assists, and one block as the Sol Blazers torched the Clifton Hunter High School All-Stars 71-30 Saturday (6 October) in Week One of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association (CIBA) Under-19 League.

“What got us the victory was our defense. We kept pressuring the ball, forcing turnovers. Scoring layups, passing the ball so everyone gets a touch, and just moving the ball around the floor.”

In the win, Blazers Devontae Andrews scored 19 pts while adding 10 steals, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Alwin Buttrum pitched in with 15 points, 8 steals and 6 rebounds.

In the loss, CHHS All-Stars Jaylin Johnson scored 23 points while adding 3 rebounds with Orlando Wellington scoring 5 points with a game-high 17 rebounds.

Week One: Girls U19

In the girls opener, Lyandrea Watson led Women of Valor Courage with 25 points, 9 steals, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block in a 52-23 win over the Clifton Hunter High School Legendz.

“Our chemistry is very nice. We have a lot of new players on our team, so we have to have a lot of patience to keep up with them so they can get more plays and experience with the older girls.”

In the win, WV Courage’s Anika Moore posted an impressive stat line just 1 steal shy of a triple-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, and 9 steals. In the loss, CHHS Legendz’ Charlene Seymour 7 pts, 6 steals and 4 rebounds with Jamie Rankin adding 6 points, 4 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks.
