Referendum close to being triggered

Cruise Port Referendum Cayman’s Mario Rankin said their petition has already surpassed three-quarters of its initiative’s signatures target to trigger a referendum on the port project. But Mr. Rankin also added that he aims to prove to the government that a referendum will be triggered and he said it will be done so by the end of October.

“The numbers are quite a bit over 4000 and we intend to get more than the 5288, that’s the goal. So even when we get that number which we are very confident we should get that number before the end of the month (October,) we are going to continue to take signatures way after the threshold because it’s important. Not only do you get the 25% that it also demonstrates a true consensus of the Cayman Islands voting public,” said Mr. Rankin.

Mr. Rankin said he believes the government will try and speed up the procurement process if they feel threatened by the referendum.  However Tourism Minister Hon. Moses Kirkconnell is on record saying the government will follow the constitution on this matter.
