Two second half goals secured Roma United both a 2-1 win over Academy Sports Club and the ‘Hot Zone Cup’ Wednesday (28 November) at the T.E McField Sports Complex.
Academy’s Trey Ebanks opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Roma opened the second half gaining a penalty kick after Jorel Bellafonte was tackled in the box. Andres Ruiz proceeded to fire the penalty to the bottom right corner, only for Academy goalkeeper Miguel Pitta to soar through the air for the stop.
In the 55th minute, Roma continued their attack on Academy’s defense with Ruiz looking to gain a second penalty kick in as many minutes. The ensuing finger pointing saw the ball trickle through the box and onto the foot of Gabra Dickens to level the game 1-1.
Moments later, Roma’s Gawayne Speed settled a cross and fired a shot that rang off the post and into the net for winner.
“It gives us some confidence to go into the rest of the season,” said Ruiz. “Obviously we play some of the teams here that we play in the season. Obviously, it’s not competitive but it’s still good.”
In the late game, Honduran ‘Team Guanaja’ drew 1-1 with Elite Sports Club to finish second overall.
